Mark Read

The photos of Mark Read, true to their documentarian roots, capture the
lives of people in faraway places like Sierra Leone, Lapland, Togo,
Zimbabwe, Niger, and even untouristed corners of Great Britain. But the
familiar aesthetic gets a fresh look in these pictures, which are
strongly composed and visually striking, often packing an emotional
punch as well. A young Mongol mother and child (“Journey of Man”), a
victim of war or disease (“Sierra Leone: A Fragile Peace”), and hopeful
women and children (“Camfed: I Have A Story to Tell”) look into the
portraitist’s camera with dignity or delight. In other works we see
reindeer milling in a holding pen or browsing on a vast steppe
(“Lapland: The Parting of the Herd”), corrugated shanties (“Togo: Child
Trafficking”), or, on a lighter note, English Elvis impersonators
talking shop, or stills from a nonexistent spinoff movie based on Fargo
(“This Is A True Story”). Read’s landscape photos are also captivating,
though different in their aesthetic philosophy, and probably digitally
enhanced.
