.Best Park for Critter Watching

Anthony Chabot Regional Park

At 5,000-plus acres, Anthony Chabot Regional Park stretches from Castro
Valley to the Oakland Hills, which makes it prime territory for
critters and critter watching. The miles of meandering trails mean
visiting Dr. Doolittles saunter right through these animals’
grasslands, chaparral, and eucalyptus groves and have a perfect
opportunity to observe their fluffy, furry, feathered friends up close.
Look up to see meadowlarks, sparrows, hummingbirds, mockingbirds,
finches, vultures, and hawks. Look down to spot lizards, snakes, and
turtles. Look all around to see crafty squirrels, skittish rabbits,
darting foxes, cautious deer, a trotting coyote, maybe a bobcat. Notice
the butterflies, honeybees, and hornets. See the grazing cows with
their gawky calves, the goats, and horses that hang nearby. The dark
brings out owls, skunks, and opossums. The best part about this wild
kingdom is that it’s just minutes away from home and immediately
accessible.
