.Best Newsstand

Issues

As the printed page itself becomes more and more of an archaic form, the newsstand becomes a de facto throwback to more web-free times. So how is it that this little shop — which, yes, also sells records and new and used books, but owes most of its inventory to magazines and newspapers — has become such a success in its first year of business? It could be the literary bent of the area: The East Bay loves to read, and would rather not do so on-screen. But it could also be the charm of the owners, Joe and Noella, who are always anxious to show you the latest publication oddity they’ve received, from Middle Eastern luxury mags to Girls and Corpses, and who love to chat with you about your purchases and magazine memories. Whatever the reason, Issues’ one-year anniversary celebration in June was packed with fawning customers, spilling out onto the street behind Peet’s, reveling in the community spirit of this Mom-and-Pop shop. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer newsstand.
