.Best New Film Director

Cary Fukunaga

After Oakland native Cary Joji Fukunaga graduated from UC Santa Cruz
and went to NYU film school, he made a living as a cameraman and
production tech on various indie projects and eventually co-wrote and
directed Victoria para chino, a narrative short about illegal
immigrants being trucked across the Mexico-Texas border. That film won
him a carload of awards on the film festival circuit — and no
doubt the chance to make Sin Nombre, a feature-length
elaboration on the same subject that happens to be one of the most
striking releases of 2009. All of a sudden, the 32-year-old filmmaker
is hot as a tin pie plate in a Juarez parking lot, inking movie deals
with Focus Features, Universal, etc., according to IMDB.com. NYU and Sundance are probably going to
take the credit for Fukunaga’s success, but we suspect the gangbang
sizzle of Sin Nombre is just the Oakland in him coming out.
