.Best New Fast Food Place

Amanda's

Businesses on Shattuck have been opening and closing their doors quite
quickly in recent years, but hopefully this new veggie-friendly
fast-food joint is here to stay. Open only since last summer, Amanda’s
typically attracts a good-sized, steady crowd throughout the day with a
menu of indulgent yet not-horrible-for-you versions of fast-food
treats: naturally raised beef and chicken burgers, homemade vegetable
patties, and baked sweet-potato fries. As part of Eat Well, a program
of the Berkeley Health and Human Services Department, Amanda’s avoids
using artificial ingredients, trans fat, and corn syrup, and flavors
their house-made sodas and chocolate milks with agave and stevia.
Besides being nutritious, the food is palatable (and not just by
health-food standards) and completely reasonable for those on a college
student budget: $3.75 gets you a juicy, grass-fed beef or homemade
veggie burger. Not quite the McDonald’s dollar menu, but Amanda’s makes
good fresh fast food available to people who can’t stomach yuppified
prices.
