Based at Rock the Bike, a grassroots Berkeley manufacturer of all
things pedal-powered, this man has created a world where bikes are
cool, Escalades are lame, and pedal-powered rap is the hottest ticket
in town. He is Fossil Fool: The Bike Rapper. As much an
environmentalist and engineer as an artist, Fossil Fool plays impromptu
street gigs where he sings about bikes, going places on bikes, and
partying with bikes. The Fool rides a home-built pedal-powered chopper
named the Choprical Fish whose rear hub is easily geared to an electric
generator; the bike is lifted on a mount, audience members pedal,
Fossil Fool raps, and the PA system sounds. In his tamer life at Rock
the Bike, Fossil Fool is known as Paul Freedman, who has invented and
innovated a wide range of bike-powered accessories, including
bike-powered blenders, bike-powered sound systems, bike-powered lights,
and super sturdy sport-utility bikes. Rock the Bike reveals all the
practical possibilities of living in a world without combustion
engines, where bikes are cool, cars suck, and music strengthens your
quads.
