Lindsay Wildlife Museum

You will find no dusty tapestries, abstract Cubism, or 800-year-old artifacts at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum … thank heaven. Instead, you’ll see a king snake, a kangaroo rat, a gray fox, and other animals native to California, eating, playing, or just taking a nap. Perched high overhead you’ll find ten or more species of raptors — this is as close as most people will ever get to a bald eagle. And just outside, you’ll find a couple of ospreys taking their afternoon bath. But don’t mistake this place for a zoo, because behind the scenes, it’s nothing like one. The museum, at its core, exists to rehabilitate injured or orphaned animals and to teach natural history in accordance with environmental responsibility. Its focus is on the history of the environment in Contra Costa County and California, so even the pleasant gardens outside hold native plants that attract birds and resist drought. It’s a touch-and-feel environment, with ongoing special presentations, petting circles (great for kids), and wildlife videos. There’s plenty of room to move around indoors and out, so you can see everything up close and take your time. The museum has outstanding educational outreach programs and provides great benefit to the community by increasing environmental awareness, in the end making the $6 general admission fee seem relatively paltry.
