UC Theater

The UC Theater lies cold as the clay from whence it came, and locked up and abandoned. Freddie Prinze Jr. posters darken the windows of its once-hallowed box office. Gone are the crowds queuing up to watch 24 beautiful frames per second of Das Boot or Bullet in the Head or any of ten thousand other art flicks. Yet the UC is not forgotten. Former owner Gary Meyer is currently conducting a feasibility study on reopening the theater. The building’s current owners are anxious to find a new tenant — the costly seismic retrofit that scared away the last one has been completed. Meyer is considering keeping the theater intact and using it as both a live performance venue and a moviehouse. Whatever happens, it’s nearly certain that the UC will never again be a full-time single-movie theater, but Meyer envisions splitting the space into one 600-seat auditorium and two smaller cinemas. The place is 85 years old and he wants it to last another 85 — at least.
