.Best Mountain

Mt. Diablo

From Livermore to Orinda to Martinez and east to Brentwood, whenever
you look up Diablo looks back. It’s best when the sun is on the horizon
and the light is kind — sunrise is a treat east of it and
sunset’s best to the west. The humps and slopes and gullies and valleys
and outcroppings are accentuated and mellower. It’s a bit craggy and
sawtooth on the north; the southern side slopes more gently. The
heathlike terrain gives way to trees about midway up, and trees give
way to rock and dirt higher on. Streams flow, meadows bloom. The
thirty-mile Diablo Trail crosses it. Its state park is reached from Mt.
Diablo Road off of Interstate 680 at Danville. Clouds often form above
and sometimes obscure its massive presence. Every few winters it snows
on top, and people rush there to marvel at the frozen wonderland, throw
snowballs, and blow on their hands.
