ReadyMade

It’s hard not to like ReadyMade magazine, with its why-buy-it-when-you-can-make-it-yourself attitude. Even if you’ll never follow a single instruction in this slick home-improvement-and-other-stuff rag for the Gen X set, even if you’ll never have use for an outdoor shower or a hanging light made of Styrofoam cups, even if you tire of the cookie-cutter models and how annoyingly cool everyone seems to be in the pages, you’ll still read ReadyMade. Oh, you can’t help but admire how clever these ideas are. A belt made of used subway tickets — why didn’t you think of that first? And all the pretty graphics are just too pleasing to the eye. Big photos + ample white space + lots of icons = a clean, easy design. Even the section names are too cute, all focusing on the theme of recycling and reusing your junk. A spread showing stuff that other people make and sell? It’s called “Re-tail.” The letters section? “Re-ply!” And of course they have a section named “MacGyver.” Okay, so you may never make the igloo that was featured in the winter issue, but it’s the thought that counts, isn’t it?
