Though we here in the East Bay have our own identity when it comes to practical matters — like politics and food — the fact is that, when it comes to something like fashion, we tend to look to our westerly neighbor. And who can blame us? We don’t even have our own –ist! But we do have a style, one that’s different from San Friskyans’ — part Berkeley prankster, part Oakland gangster, and a whole lot of hip on the side. And our ancestors owed their good looks to their local dressmaker and apothecary. So why schlep from the Haight to Hayes Valley to gussy up? There’s no need with Suzzanna Amanzio and Grace Blasco of Fashion Forward — East Bay on your side. Since March, the two ladies have been dishing on everything from $200 shoes to secondhand blues, menswear, to skincare. They cover East Bay stores, events, designers, and more, and since both Amanzio and Blasco studied English (the former at Mills, the latter at Cal) you won’t wince whilst you read. With the profusion of DIY craftspeople and other creative-style types on our side of the bridge, we don’t think they’ll run out of subjects any time soon.
