Derick Hughes

Derick Hughes has only one rival as the Bay Area’s most awesome vocalist: his father, ’60s soul man Freddie Hughes. And when the two share the same stage, as sometimes happens, the result can be mindblowing. Keeping track of Derek is difficult. He’ll pop up at the 5th Amendment with guitarist Lloyd Gregory’s band for a period, then go out on the road with Tower of Power for a month. He was recently spotted by Sylvia Chan at Mingles, but his extended engagement there ended almost as soon as it began. Derek — who worked for a while with Prince, toured with gospel greats Isaac Douglas and Sandra Crouch, and recorded with Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy — put out a terrific CD of his own last year titled All for Love, though it’s nearly impossible to find. Derek is, however, slated to appear at Kimball’s East (6005 Shellmound, Emeryville; 510-658-2555) next Friday and Saturday, September 28 and 29, as part of a show starring San Francisco smooth-jazz pianist Ricardo Scales and also featuring former East Bay percussionist Pete Escovedo. Expect many of Derek’s adoring female fans to be on hand to swoon to his every syllable-splitting curlicue and wondrous leap of register.
