.Best Local Portrait of Indie-Film Angst

Frazer Bradshaw

Only someone who really knows the turf could capture the essential
sun-splashed hopelessness of the North Oakland working-class flatlands
the way Frazer Bradshaw’s film Everything Strange and New does.
East Bay resident Bradshaw’s slower-than-slow character study is
anything but “leisurely paced.” In fact it’s quite hectic, in a numbed
way, in chronicling the ups and downs — mostly downs — of a
journeyman carpenter named Wayne (played by actor Jerry McDaniel) as he
unsteadily negotiates his life on the job and at home with the wife and
kids. Bradshaw, a veteran indie cinematographer, wrote, directed, and
shot the 2009 production on location. You’ll recognize the streets and
you’ll recognize Wayne, if only as a type — everyone knows
someone like him. Everything Strange and New played the San
Francisco International Film Festival last April.
