.Best Jewelry Store: Victorian jewelry for the contemporary woman

Tail of the Yak

Okay, few of us can drop $800 on a pair of earrings, but this place is worth a visit anyway. The lovely shop is a paean to all things female and froufrou — ribbons, potions, floral photo albums, and gorgeous embroidered shawls. But the real standout here is the store’s incredible jewelry, much of it 18th- and 19th-century European bling-bling. For anywhere from $250 to $3,000, you can buy lovely Victorian earrings, brooches, and rings studded with seed pearls, diamonds, or emeralds. Other pieces incorporate turquoise, coral, and shells in their designs. Ornate antique Mexican gold earrings are on sale here along with contemporary jewelry from Mexico and India. The store has been in business for 32 years and its namesake is a relic from its original days when it exclusively sold Tibetan and Nepalese goods. Store owners Alice Hoffman Erb and Lauren Swan McIntosh regularly travel throughout Europe to keep their antique jewel stock fresh. A great place for engagement rings and earrings to wear on your wedding day.
