.Best General Practitioner

Dr. Kenneth Gjeltema

Got a throbbing knee? Mild depression? Paranoid about potentially having breast cancer after reading a jarring magazine article? And just one doctor’s visit in which you hope to deal with them all? No worries — this genial family physician will patiently solve every mystery ailment on your list, and he’ll do it with the kind of warm professionalism that’s a rarity these days. Gjeltema, who’s joined by a handful of other docs and nurse practitioners as part of Albany Family Practice, is a hands-on kind of guy, the type you could imagine standing on a doorstep clutching a well-worn black leather bag back in the old days. He won’t simply tell you what’s going on with your body; he’ll show you why. For the knee, he’ll dash out of the examining room and return with a plastic skeletal model of the leg. He’ll capably quiz you about your recent mood swings before offering his two cents on anti-depressants. He’ll even take the time to walk you through how to give yourself a proper breast exam — something several female doctors one patient had seen prior had never bothered to do. As with most docs, you’ll have to watch the clock tick for a while in the busy waiting room first — but this is one doctor who is well worth waiting for.
