Club 1220

For most people, country line dancing has gone the way of the Lambada and the Macarena. But don’t tell that to the fine people at Walnut Creek’s Club 1220, which hosts gay and lesbian country line dancing every other Saturday night. The extremely popular event draws a crowd of singles, couples, beginners, and, uh, “experts” (but do you really want that on your résumé?), who line up to toe-tap and grab a buckle or two. DJs spin the music and the booze flows freely. The next event is on May 11. Other packed nights include Wednesdays, when the mostly twentysomething crowd watches Queer as Folk at 8 p.m., and then there’s karaoke and dancing until closing. Fridays have a versatile DJ who plays Latin, hip-hop, house, and even Frank Sinatra. And the crowd is fairly evenly divided by gender. Even people from SF show up.
