The Fireside is an old Navy hangout from the days when the Alameda Naval Air Station was still up and running, but its claim to fame now is a homemade delicacy known as garlic noodles. A variation on chicken soup, this dish is made with chicken (all white meat), garlic, chives, sweet onions, homemade chicken stock, and white noodles. (All this in addition to a few secret ingredients the management won’t identify.) One regular described these noodles as a cure for the common cold, not to mention a good way to battle plain old cold weather. The price is right: less than five bucks for a huge bowl. But plan ahead. Garlic noodles are only served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday-Friday, and on the first three Saturdays of every month.
