.Best Experimental Music Performance Space

Tuva

The East Bay smacks down San Francisco when it comes to experimental music venues. The Black Box, Transparent Theater, 1502 Performance Space, 21Grand, and Tuva are among the stellar rooms that follow in the Mills College tradition of showcasing nontraditional music. Tuva wins the Best Of designation for its homey ambience, its diverse and free-form performance schedule, and the fact that most of its shows take place on Sunday night — the perfect night to appreciate new music. Tuva serves as home and studio to Arjuna, a throat singer who holds a drop-in introductory class on the second Saturday of the month. Besides performances by Ohana, Arjuna’s “harmonic choir,” Acme Observatory programs a contemporary music series on the first and third Sundays each month. Other simpatico groups round out the schedule, making Tuva a consistently intriguing place to go.
