.Best Ethnic Grocery: If you’ve been craving camel

Indus Food Center

Yeah, you read that right. Camel. The staff at West Berkeley’s Indus Food Center are constantly experimenting with new food imports, and for about a year they offered butchered camel. It didn’t catch on, but store manager Sean Salimi just might bring it back if enough people ask for it. “It tastes like beef,” he says, “but has no cholesterol.” In addition to the occasional dromedary line, Salimi also offers goat and halal-butchered free-range meats, which the staff raises on a ranch near Livingston. In fact, Salimi invites his customers to tour the ranch and watch the animals graze for themselves. His staff also constantly experiments with new spices; the butcher, the chefs, the Atkins specialist, and the vegetarian experts all sample new spices offered from Asia, and offer recommendations on which goes best with what foods. For a while, they even offered a sweet-and-tangy spice known simply as “egg spice,” which was exclusively offered with omelets. Since its beginning as a goat butcher shop in 1979, the Indus Food Center has expanded to include halal meats and Greek and Turkish delicacies. Discover the meal you never thought you’d try while walking through its aisles.
