Les Waters

Berkeley Rep associate artistic director Les Waters makes it worth seeing pretty much anything he directs, even if those projects are so widely varied it’s impossible to know just what to expect. A champion of new plays and new playwrights, the English-born, Obie award-winning director has been responsible for some of the most impressive productions at the Rep in recent years — which is saying something because the others haven’t been too shabby. Waters has time and again shown a special affinity for unusual new work (Finn in the Underworld, TRAGEDY: a tragedy, Fêtes de la Nuit, To the Lighthouse), as well as a deft hand with old chestnuts when called upon to tackle them (The Glass Menagerie, Heartbreak House). After superlative stagings of Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman and Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, Waters will return to both playwrights next season for McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore and the world premiere of Ruhl’s The Vibrator Play.
