Any midnight snacker will tell you that the act of creating a sandwich
is a complex discipline requiring an innate sense of balance and a
willingness to push the envelope. The fried oyster po’ boy and the
ahi/wasabi BLT are two noteworthy successes in this area. Another is
the Cuban sandwich, which like every great sandwich offers a lot of
satisfaction in a relatively small package. La Taza’s version is
outstanding. Creamy, hearty, tender and spicy all at once, it combines
peppery pulled pork with slivers of smoked ham, pungent Gruyére,
and spiky mustard inside a soft, pillowy roll that serves to cushion
the dynamic flavors. Result: wonderfulness. This handheld yet
substantial meal is served during Sunday brunch, a festive affair best
enjoyed out on the restaurant’s back patio among the encompassingly
Caribbean wicker, palm trees, and trellised bougainvillea. (You might
want to order a pitcher of house sangria.)
