.Best Converted Church

Marmot Mountain Works

“Orthodox” means “correctly believing,” and Eastern Orthodox Church
architecture is pretty … well, orthodox. The church’s altar
invariably faces east, and on either side of it are arms so that from
heaven (or a Google Earth satellite) the church looks like a giant
cross. And finally, of course, there’s an onion-shaped dome at the top,
a practical design in Russia where they discovered that a
standard-shape dome collected a frightening amount of snow, but a mere
decoration in the East Bay. So you can imagine its leader rolling in
his grave — or rising from it — at the sight of the Marmot
Mountain Works in Berkeley. Once the home of a congregation that moved
on, the church building has been desacralized and handed over to the
moneychangers. Rather than looking within for spiritual comfort, this
church now invites its worshippers to look (and hike and climb and camp
and run) outside, preferably with excellent outdoor gear.
