When the talkies hit the scene in ’27, chicks who sounded like Abe Vigoda weren’t the only things to go the way of the dodo. The mighty Wurlitzer organ that had played during the silents also hit the skids. These days a few old-timey theaters still have one (cases in point: the Paramount and the Grand Lake) and the rest seem to be scattered across the States in museums, roller rinks, or anywhere else that will have ’em. Bella Roma Pizza in Martinez is just one such joint, with live organ music Tuesday through Sunday, 6-9 p.m. As if that’s not cool enough, they also have a toy train that runs the periphery of the ceiling, making this a great spot for a goofy date or a kid’s birthday. The pizza is kickass, too.
