.Best Collection of Craftsman Bungalows

Near Downtown Martinez

These American classics with Parthenonic proportions, solid demeanor,
and fine details went up between 1905 and 1920, the Craftsman era.
They’re along Alhambra Avenue near the high school and further north on
Alhambra and adjacent streets, and around the junior high school. All
bungalows don’t have all of the typical features, but look for
low-pitched roofs, wide overhangs with visible rafter ends, faux elbow
joints appearing to support roof beams, fine details, square columns
resting on the ground and tapering in and up to above the porch floor
supporting the roof columns. Narrow windows flank a wide window. The
crosspieces of the smaller windows and the higher crosspiece of the
larger window form a notch, one of the wonderful details. Small panes
often appear in the tops of the windows. Almost all of these beauties
remain as designed and built, perhaps a combination of their durability
and the owners’ devotion and aesthetic sense.
