.Best Brunch Place for Vegans and Carnivores to Coexist

Venus Restaurant

Brunch is no place for vegans. It’s an eggy, cheesy, bacony affair, a
celebration of animal products of all kinds, from the lox on your bagel
to the cream in your coffee. But the typical vegan-specific brunch is
either a hopelessly bland assortment of tofu scrambles done seventeen
ways, or it’s a glorified and renamed lunch, all sandwiches and salads
and savory fare. The Shattuck slow-food joint Venus manages to get it
right, though, adeptly catering to both omni- and herbivores with its
weekend brunch. They’ve got plenty of meat- and dairy-free options,
waitstaff are always willing to make substitutions and suggestions to
accommodate vegans and vegetarians, and the Harajuku scramble (tofu and
veggies in a tangy sesame sauce, served with crispy-delicious home
fries, toast, and apricot jam) is so filling and flavorful it’d make
even the most ardent meat-eater a little jealous. Meanwhile, the Indian
Brunch (curried vegetable pancakes, spicy scrambled eggs, and a creamy
banana raita), is unexpected and hearty, and there’s a wide selection
of omelets, pancakes, and free-range meats.
