Lust to Kill by Robert Scott

At her 14th birthday party, A-student and gifted musician Jenny Lin
“laughed as she received a troll doll, among other gifts,” Robert Scott
writes in his latest true-crime page-turner, Lust to Kill: A Twisted
Misfit’s Murderous Frenzy
. The party was recorded on videotape at
the Lin family’s Castro Valley home. Two days later, Jenny’s father
entered that home to find his daughter slain. At her funeral, “stuffed
animals and her viola lay in her coffin beside her — the same
viola she had been playing since she was three years old.” Sadly, the
case went cold. But Oregon detectives are now investigating a possible
suspect, convicted killer Sebastian Shaw, who slew other victims in
similar ways at around the same time. Evidence against Shaw is piling
up, including boasts he made to a cellmate as well as his resemblance
to a man whom a neighbor spotted lurking near the Lin home on the day
of the murder. The book examines Shaw’s whole life — born Chau
Quong Ho, he was among the last Vietnamese to be helicoptered to safety
during the fall of Saigon — and heinous crimes. Scott, who
lives in Orinda and devotes the book’s final chapter to the Lin case,
hopes the investigation can someday find justice for Jenny’s family.
