Bombay Music House

If Ashton Kutcher, Hillary Duff, the Rock, and Catherine Zeta-Jones give you the unadulterated icks, but you’re not ready to give up your larger-than-life movie habit, you may be ready for Bollywood. And there’s no better place to feast on tangled plots, bared bellies, and song-and-dance numbers than Berkeley’s Bombay Music House. Anil Ajamani’s place has been around for nearly two decades, and he knows what he’s doing. Bombay Music has approximately seven thousand titles for rent — all DVDs, no bootlegs — so you can always be guaranteed the full kaleidoscopic effect. And the selection ranges from classics like Vijay Anand’s 1967 masterpiece of Mary Quantish, mistaken-identity kitsch The Jewel Thief (of which they have fifteen copies!) to newer hits like Vardaast and Masti. The store is open every day (10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, 10 to 7 on Monday) and, best of all, it has a $20 monthly flat rate which allows you to rent as many movies as you want in a month, keeping as many as three out at once with no due date or late fee. So you really don’t ever have to say you’re sari.
