.Best Beer Selection: Liquid sin from the farthest corners

Warehouse Cafe

Fancy a pilsner from Lebanon? How about a lager from India? Or a stout from Brazil? Warehouse Cafe, which used to function as wheat storage for Southern Pacific, is the place, whether you’re looking for that certain beer that you haven’t seen since El Salvador, eager to travel the world through the fine art of beer brewing, or just bored with the selection at your local store. The 11″x 17″ menu is crowded with dense type listing more than 450 beers from more than 35 countries, including the strongest beer in the world — Switzerland’s Samichlaus Brown, 14 percent alcohol, brewed each December 6 and aged eleven months before bottling — and Caledonian Brewery’s Golden Promise, Britain’s first organic beer. The Warehouse also boasts more than 125 domestic microbrews, each bottle for a reasonable $3.50, and the standard domestic pisswaters at $2.75 a pop. Be warned: The menu doesn’t necessarily reflect availability. “We don’t have lots of the beers on there, but we have lots of beers that aren’t listed in the fridge out back,” one harried bartender said. Best to wait for a lull in the crowd and ask to be shown the astounding back cooler, where a wall of unusual bottles to choose from awaits.
