Bar food. The sound of it doesn’t really make your stomach growl, eh? Visions abound of thoroughly average pizza, burgers, and various greasy staples. Enter Hayward’s Buffalo Bill’s Brewery, a brewpub you may even visit just for the food. It doesn’t get too fancy, but it does offer a twist on the basics that’s executed well enough to put it atop the pub-food heap. One of their Plowman’s Board appetizer platters may be all you need to accompany a few pints from their ever-changing beer menu, what with assorted gourmet meats and cheeses, a little sourdough, and some fresh fruit. Or you might go for a wood-fired pizza — Bill’s offers some imaginative combinations in addition to the basics. There are plenty of wraps, sandwiches, and pastas, too — check out the Aztec quesadilla, which combines mole sauce, chicken, cheeses, roasted onions, and marinated cactus. Bill’s also makes a great salad with blue cheese and candied nuts.
