.Best Bar to Take the Kids To

Jupiter

Every college town has that comfortably boisterous pizza-and-beer joint
where friendly students serve pub food and a rotating menu of good
handcrafted beers. Jupiter is one of those, and you can also add it to
the long, long list of “only in Berkeley” phenomena for its world-class
distinction of having creating a loophole of child-tolerance. Most
nights, the live music (mostly jazz, of all persuasions) is geared
toward nonbreeders who don’t turn into pumpkins at 8 p.m. Sunday
evenings, though, Jupiter is the kid-friendliest watering hole this
side of Willie Wonka’s Chocolate River. Don’t get the wrong impression;
they don’t offer crayons or dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets, and you
might have to put down your delicious Red Spot Ale to go shoo the
kiddies away from the fire-spewing fountain. But patient servers dodge
toddlers with acrobatic precision, and the weekly Americana Unplugged
series features free, foot-stomping bluegrass at 5 p.m., early enough
to get everyone fed, partied out, and home to bed on time. Tables fill
up fast, so get there early.
