.Best Bar Food: For the thirsty and the ravenous

The New Zealander

There are two reasons to get drunk at the New Zealander in Alameda. First, the 19th-century bar is gorgeous enough to give your date a good first impression before you get sloppy like you always do. Second, the food can’t be beat. There are sausage rolls, Vegemite and cheese sandwiches, and mince pie. The loaf-shaped pot pie, ground beef and gravy inside two different kinds of flaky pastry, is New Zealand’s national fast food. (Vegetarians can get spinach and feta or curried vegetable.) If you really do have five too many Steinlagers and need something heavier, order owner Clive Hitchens’ favorite bar food from Auckland: the 3 a.m. White Lady burger, named after a famous trailer that pulls up outside the bars after last call. It’s topped with cheese, ham, pineapple, pickled beets, and a fried egg, as well as all the regular fixins. You may not be ready to drive home afterward, but just one of those should soak up enough booze to prevent a nasty hangover.
