Talk about subculture! Nabolom Bakery has been feeding Berkeley freaks
of all stripes since 1976. Collectively run, the bakery is as vital an
institution as the Long Haul, People’s Park, or the Purple House. In
its 33 years, Nabolom has supplied Food Not Bombs with baked goods and
provided a venue for fiery meetings about everything from police
brutality to yuppie death culture. But don’t worry if your freak flag
isn’t flying quite that high; the only thing Nabolom peddles is
delicious pastries and good strong coffee — organic and fair
trade, no less. Those in the know go for the cinnamon twist or the
cranberry nut muffin. There are plenty of vegan options, too, and if
you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, Nabolom has a wide array of
breads, cheese rolls, and even pizza.
