Feel Good Bakery

At the Feel Good Bakery in Alameda, the French baguettes are often still warm from the oven, but even when they aren’t, they’re exceptional: crunchy, moist, and tasting far more European than many of their better-known competitors. The price tag is steep ($3 and rising nearly as fast as yeast; last year they made the leap from $2 to $2.50) but the flavor and freshness are compensation. So too is the card you get punched every time you buy a loaf (twelve and you get one free). Also essential: the triple levain, the black olive bread (toasted with butter, it’s indecent), and the cheese breads, oozing with whatever the cheese of the day is.
