Art Murmur regulars may already be familiar with this small, hip
gallery located at the corner of 23rd Street and Telegraph Avenue,
right at the center of First Friday festivities, but gallerygoers
interested in seeing well-crafted and ingenious contemporary art when
the crowds are no longer troublesome should add it to their diurnal art
itineraries. The two- or three-person exhibitions here are of high
quality, and are aesthetically consistent to a surprising degree. While
the gallery’s long, arcaded space may remind you a little of Romanesque
church architecture, the faux-grass ceiling by Misako Inaoka, the
recycled exploded-bark floor, and the variously lyrical or ironic
artworks by local and international artists Jim Campbell, Nathan
Cordero, Jill Gallenstein, Amanda Hughen, Lawrence LaBianca, Kristina
Lewis, Tadashi Moriyama, Jen Stark, and Katy Stone, among others, will
erase any incipient feelings of High Church of Art intimidation —
as will the titles of the shows, which are often as strange and
humorous as the artwork hanging on the walls or from the ceiling, or
scuttling across the floors or around corners.
