.7:52 p.m. Thursday: Best Photo Tour of Old San Leandro

Harry's Hofbrau

Thursday is a good day to show up for dinner at Harry’s Hofbrau. The special is a huge plate of corned beef and cabbage, which will set you back less than ten bucks and satisfy your carnivorous cravings for the next week. For another three dollars, you can add a slice of Boston cream pie or strawberry shortcake. In other words, this is a place that food trends forgot. The decor features lots of dark wood, high-backed padded booths, and a collection of Jim Beam decanters scattered in cases throughout the large main room. Before you waddle out, be sure to check out the dozens of framed black-and-white photos hanging on the walls. Remember Geisenhofer’s Bakery and Coffee Saloon? Probably not, since the picture of it dates from 1876. Nearby is a shot taken at the city’s premiere Cherry Festival (1909) and another of San Leandro’s “First Auto Fire Truck” (1915). They’re placed in no particular order, so you can see a photo of a worker posing with a sledgehammer at an 1890 blacksmith shop next to a Prohibition-era one of revenue agents standing next to an illegal still. By the way, the bartender at Harry’s pulls an excellent pint of Guinness, and if you can’t make it on Thursday, they pull out the barbecue and grill some out-of-this-world tri-tip on Fridays.
