Du Vin Fine Wines

There wasn’t even a wine shop in the island city when Dan Marshall opened Du Vin Fine Wines just over a year ago. Inside his tiny storefront on Santa Clara Avenue, he’s packed in some six hundred different wines in a range of styles and price ranges. But what sets Du Vin apart from other Bay Area shops is the geographical diversity of his selections. In addition to the “usual suspects,” the shelves are stocked with vintages from twenty countries, including Lebanon, Austria, and Switzerland, plus a few from places people don’t often associate with vinifera grapes, such as England and Hungary. Marshall’s array of Greek wine is one of the best on the West Coast, and goes far beyond the pine-flavored retsina that many people associate with that country. The wines aren’t picked for their quirky appellations — Marshall carefully tastes each one before stocking it. That means he can help customers pick a bottle to go with their sole Florentine or chicken empanadas. And don’t worry, he’s used to customers giving him quizzical looks and saying in a puzzled tone, “Uruguay?”
