.3:20 p.m. Saturday: Best Place to Get a Last-Second Costume in May

Thrift Town

You’ll have plenty of options come Halloween, but suppose your thespian friends want you to show up at their spring party as a specific character. This happens sometimes, and recently did: The character in question was a Midwestern, Led-Zep-lovin’, white-trash stoner kid whose parents didn’t pay enough attention to him. But how to dress this troubled young man? The answer was easily and inexpensively found on the copious racks of Thrift Town, where you sort through trash to find hipster treasure, and there’s more than enough of both. In cases like this, the trash is the treasure: And there it was, a brand-new, jet-black T-shirt discreetly emblazoned with the huge, bald, sneering mug of pro wrestler Goldberg. Had to have it — $2.95. A little more fishin’ yielded a sleeveless blue-and-white flannel thingamajig with a hood, some black denim jeans, and scrappy work boots. The whole ensemble cost less than $15 — Thrift Town lives up to its name. Besides the wacky and kitschy stuff you’d sport for a 3 a.m. Kojak rerun party, you’ll find 9-to-5-yet-somehow-hip button-downs and trousers for two or three bucks. That strangely cool vintage evening dress might cost you a tenner, and for twelve bucks or so, you can have the high-school letter jacket you never could earn in high school. Thrift Town has plenty of cheap accessories, too, and daily 50 percent off sales that depend on the color of your price tags. Showing up when the doors open at 9 a.m. (10 on Saturdays; 11 on Sundays), won’t hurt your chances, but it won’t help either: New offerings are put out every weekday, all day long.
