.3:00 p.m. Wednesday: Best Low-Tech Artwork

Berkeley Stamp & Engraving Co.

Bored with clip-art, e-cards, and other instant forgettables churned out of the factory of overused pop images? For ten bucks, this venerable Berkeley shop will make you a one-of-a-kind rubber stamp from a black-and-white photocopy of your favorite papercut or your newest tattoo. Stamp your personal image on real paper, mail it with a handwritten message, and experience the low-tech pleasures of a disappearing era! As recently as last year, a visit here held the additional charm of Walter Ellis, the 89-year-old proprietor who founded the shop in 1929 with his father and moved about the jumble of dusty shelves and desks with an unerring sense of where everything belonged. Today the business has been handed down to Ellis’ grandnephew, Brandon Netz, who has painted the walls, cleared away the clutter, and brought in sunlight.
