Corazón del Pueblo

Trinidad and Josefina Lopez opened Corazón del Pueblo (Heart of the People) around Christmas of 1996. It’s a community art gallery, bilingual bookstore, and emporium for imported Mexican posters, cards, and arts and crafts. It also features Chicano and Latino art and literature by local artists and authors. Trinidad passed on in 2000, but retired teacher Doña Josefina has since added to the store’s inventory with indigenous ceramics, furniture, icons, papel picado (cut-paper), an incredible collection of Frida Kahlo dolls, and images of La Virgin de Guadalupe in all kinds of shapes and sizes. In the last year the store has been more socially active, hosting traditional gatherings including Christmas Posada Processions, an unveiling of the new Cesar Chavez stamp, and a night celebrating Ernesto Nava, the 88-year-old son of Pancho Villa, who lives in Hayward.
