.12:59 p.m. Saturday: Best Place to Buy a Sari

Sari Palace

Few clothing stores carry traditional Indian clothing, and even fewer carry a substantial selection. Sari Palace offers a huge selection, including saris, salwar kameez, dupatta scarves, sherwani (fancy shirts for men), jodhpuri (fancy jackets for men), and kurta pajamas — all available in a wide variety of gorgeous fabrics, from fine ivory-colored cotton to peacock-green silk. This isn’t the Gap, and that’s refreshing — you’ll find no relaxed-fit khaki here. You’ll also be spared pushy, insincere, commission-driven sales associates. The Sari Palace staff is helpful, if reserved, polite, and incredibly efficient, miraculously capable of eyeballing your size and making alterations meticulously and quickly. Saturday afternoons bustle, but it’s the best time to experience the high energy and see what other people buy. Clothing here isn’t cheaply made, nor is it cheap. It’s easy to spend a few hundred dollars, but it’s a great place to find something uniquely beautiful for a special occasion. That said, tell a staff member that you have $80 and love the color blue, and you’ll leave smiling.
