.12:03 a.m. Thursday: Best Place to Get Your Camus On

Schmidt's Pub

The day is almost done, and there’s one last thing you need to take care of: smoking. If it’s midnight, and you’ve got — ahem — a burning need to fire up an exotic coffin nail and settle down with “The Myth of Sisyphus,” it’s time to check out Schmidt’s Pub, which offers an Old World charm that seems increasingly lacking in our land of subdivisions and neon. The pub is nothing more than a house converted into a smoke shop, where patrons can pick up all manner of pipe tobacco, European cigarettes, and even a pint or two. Then it’s off to the couches near the fireplace, for a good read or a game of Scrabble in the last outpost of civilization in America. Those who want to actually smoke have their choice of two porches, front and back. A word to the wise: The back is considerably cozier.
