.10:30 a.m. Saturday: Best Way to Tour Oaktown’s Waterfront Wasteland

With a Kayak from Oakland All Craft

No need to drive to Bodega Bay for your kayak jones. Joe Brigandi of Oakland All Craft can hook you up with a one- or two-seater from which to peruse the city’s aquatic netherworld. Joe, who runs his business from an old caboose parked at 5th Avenue and Embarcadero, will outfit you and guide you to the nearby boat ramp (you carry the kayak, pal). Explore the wonders of the Embarcadero Cove and the surrounding canals and estuaries, including the hulking Art Ship, funky houseboats, yachts, sailboat races, and the rusting backsides of industrial Oaktown. The estuary east of the Park Street Bridge offers more tranquility and perhaps some waterfowl sightings. Mornings tend to be best, since the midday sun can be harsh and the wind picks up by the late afternoon. Dock the boat at Quinn’s Lighthouse Restaurant and Pub, and refuel with beer, burgers, and an endless supply of peanuts. All Craft also operates a bimonthly sea kayaking school in the summer. The hours can vary, so call in advance for an appointment.
