Friday's Briefing: End to Oakland teachers strike 'almost there'?; Mavericks running out of time

1. With massive flooding in the region around Guerneville, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Sonoma County, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. $$

2. "Pacific Gas & Electric acknowledged Thursday that it will likely be found responsible for the deadliest wildfire in California history," CNN reports. The response comes a day after the utility was found to have known the transmission tower believed to have caused the Camp Fire required maintenance for five years.

3. A union official told a rally of 1,000 striking Oakland officials to "stay strong" and a resolution to the six day is "almost there," the East Bay Times reports. In addition, teachers from San Francisco, Berkeley, Albany, and San Lorenzo staged sicks out and joined Oakland teachers in solidarity, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. $$ 

4. Last year's intra-party race in the 15th Assembly District is only a few months in the rearview, but former Richmond Councilmember Jovanka Beckles, who lost to Buffy Wicks, has already opened an exploratory committee, with an eye perhaps for a 2020 rematch, the East Bay Citizen reports.

5. Homes sales plummeted in Alameda County by 30 percent from December to January, Kathleen Pender reports in the San Francisco Chronicle. In addition, the median sale price dropped by 12 percent to $732,250 during the same period. $$

6. Mavericks, the world renowned Bay Area surfing competition is quickly running out of time to stage a contest this season due to rainy weather in February, Bruce Jenkins reports in SFGate.

7. In sportsball news, the Golden State Warriors dropped two straight in the Sunshine State, but visited survivors of last year's Parkland shootings, the USA Today reports.
