BART workers went on strike today for the first time in sixteen years, shutting down the regional transit system and forcing about 400,000 commuters to find other ways to get to work, SFGate and the Trib report. BART unions are demanding pay increases following years of cutbacks during the recession. Negotiations with management failed to produce a deal during talks on Sunday as the two sides remained far apart. No bargaining sessions were scheduled for today. The last strike, in 1997, lasted six days.
