Illiterate About Elections? Visit Electionland

If you’re like a lot of people, you’re probably sick of election propaganda (and Meg Whitman ads). Or maybe you’re overworked and underpaid and have had no time to decipher the statewide ballot initiatives and local races — let alone know who’s running. But getting a better grasp on the November 2 election doesn’t have to be daunting — or a blatant advertisement of your own laziness or ignorance (or both). Instead, turn to our experts and your more-educated peers at Electionland.com, a nonpartisan, social media web site sponsored by Rock the Vote, where people can ask and answer questions about everything related to elections in their state.

The East Bay Express is proud to be the exclusive media sponsor of Electionland’s California site (CA.Electionland.com). Electionland is designed to inform the voting public about the things they care about, from finding their polling places and understanding issues to interacting directly with candidates — all organized on a state level. The site is managed by professional moderators (i.e., not us overworked Express staffers).

To kick off CA.Electionland.com, we’ve rounded up a panel of experts to answer your election-related questions, including the Oakland Tribune’s Josh Richman, the Greenlining Institute’s Samuel Kang, and the Express’ own Robert Gammon and David Downs. You can ask them about local races, statewide propositions, or anything else you’re curious about. Just go here. Sign up for a profile or log in using your Facebook account and submit your question by Friday, October 8. Like magic, you’ll get an e-mail when it’s answered.

We’ll be organizing other expert panels on specific local and select statewide ballots, too, so keep a lookout on EastBayExpress.com or in the paper for more details. Here’s hoping Electionland will help make your decisions a bit more informed — and entertained. Thanks for engaging.
