Bay Bridge Commute May Rise to $6

The toll on the Bay Bridge during commute hours would rise to $6 under a plan being considered by the Bay Area Toll Authority. According to the Chron and the CoCo Times, the toll on the Bay Bridge would remain $4 during non-commute hours, but would increase to $5 on weekends. The tolls on all other bridges in the Bay Area, except the Golden Gate Bridge, would rise to $5 at all times under the plan. In addition, carpoolers would start paying a $2.50 toll on all bridges.

The toll increases are to pay for seismic strengthening on the Antioch and Dumbarton bridges and to cover increased operating and debt-repayment costs. The toll authority plans to take up the proposal next month, and the increases would go into effect in July. Tolls for trucks also would jump sharply, but not until 2011. The toll increases are expected to produce about $160 million in revenues.
