.Priuses May Roll Off an East Bay Assembly Line

The joint automotive venture in Fremont between Toyota and GM, known as NUMMI, could begin making Priuses, according to Bloomberg News. The possible move could be a savior for the New United Motors Manufacturing Inc. plant, in light of GM’s bankruptcy. The plant, one of Alameda County’s largest private employers, makes Toyota Tacoma trucks and Corollas, along with GM’s Pontiac Vibe. But the Vibe is going out of production early next year, because GM is getting rid of Pontiac as part of its bankruptcy restructuring, a process that also puts the future of NUMMI in doubt. But adding Priuses to the plant could keep it going, considering the popularity of the hybrid car in California, and because Toyota plans to begin selling Prius plug-in hybrids in 2011.
