In a city known for horrific crimes, this may be a new low. Police said a 97-year-old woman was beaten to death in her own Adams Point neighborhood apartment, according to the Chron and the Trib. Ivarene Lett is believed to be the oldest person ever murdered in the city. She was slight and frail, yet active, independent, and full of energy. She was found dead in her apartment inside a 71-unit, secure building just a few blocks from Lake Merritt. Police have no suspects and know of no motive, although the building's superintendent believes Lett must have been killed by someone she knew. Mayor Ron Dellums is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of her killer or killers.
