Slap Hitter: Warriors dismal season ends. Thousands bummed

Fri, Apr 17, 2009 at 8:57 PM

The Golden State Warriors fell out of the race for the playoffs around Halloween, yet continued to play through Easter. Their 29-52 record placed them a slim 35 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers, and yet.....do you realize how amazingly well the Warriors filled the Oracle Arena? Or like me, did you stop following their travails about the time the last trick or treater dropped by?

Here's the thing. The Warriors with their commitment to mediocrity, one playoff since the first Bush adminstration, will fucking own this town if they ever do get good. Check it out 19,000 fans a night. Every night. Against bad opponents, on a Tuesday. On rainy nights. On Sundays. With no significant coverage to speak of other than game day recaps. And the seats aren't cheap. It is almost unbelievable that months after being eliminated from the race a Golden State game outdrew the Oakland A's on the first weekend, a beautiful weekend after being gone for half a year.

The Warriors defy the bad economy, the half-hearted reportage , and terrible, terrible basketball and sellout all the time. Insanely they are the East Bay's toughest ticket. People (I haven't met them) love this team.

The next two months will be chock-a-bloc with high flying NBA playoff action, by the time June rolls around and a new champion is crowned, the Warriors won't be a speck in the rear view window. But as the A's sink slowly in the West and the Raiders fumble another draft pick/line coach/press conference, remember that lying in wait is the Warrior nation. How did a team this crappy get fans so good?— Kibby Kleiman
