.NY Times Thinks We’re Neat

The Sunday New York Times had not one, but two shout-outs to clever East Bay folks last weekend. First up: Berkeley resident Ernest Callenbach, the science editor who wrote the cult uptopian novel Ecotopia in the 1970s. Although the Times doesn’t think much of it as a work of art, the ideas promulgated by the book (locavore culture, recycling, etc.) have since become key elements to sustainable living. In fact, the author argues, Callenbach’s ecological urban vision essentially prefigured the city of Portland.
